How to connect ChatGPT or Claude to your mello mail

mello has a connector for AI assistants, so you can ask Claude or ChatGPT about your own mail: “what did the landlord say about the deposit?”, or “put Thursday’s dentist appointment in my calendar”. You sign in on mello’s own page, never in the assistant. By default the assistant can only prepare drafts. Sending is a separate permission, and you decide whether to give it.

How it works

The connector uses MCP, an open standard for connecting assistants to other services. Its address is https://mcp.mello.mx/mcp, and there’s nothing to install.

When you connect, the assistant opens mello’s Connect an app page. It shows which app is asking. If you’re signed in to the webmail, you only confirm; otherwise you enter your mello address and password there. The assistant never sees your password: it gets a key to your mailbox, and nothing else.

This is separate from mello’s own assistant under Settings → AI. You can use one, both or neither. mello is invite only for now: request an invite if you don’t have an address yet.

Connect Claude

In Claude on the web, the desktop app or the mobile app:

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it mello, enter https://mcp.mello.mx/mcp as the URL, and add it.
  3. Choose Connect. mello’s page opens: sign in, or confirm if you’re already signed in.
  4. Tick Also allow sending mail only if you want Claude to send (see below), then choose Allow.

In Claude Code, add it with one command, then type /mcp in Claude Code and pick mello to sign in in your browser:

claude mcp add --transport http mello https://mcp.mello.mx/mcp

Connect ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT, add the mello mail app.
  2. When ChatGPT asks you to sign in, mello’s page opens. Sign in, or confirm if you’re already signed in to the webmail.
  3. Tick Also allow sending mail only if you want ChatGPT to send, then choose Allow.

If you use ChatGPT’s developer mode, you can instead add a connector yourself with the URL https://mcp.mello.mx/mcp. The sign-in is the same.

What the assistant can do

Ask in plain words, as you would ask a person. The assistant can:

  • Find mail in every folder at once. Search tolerates typos, and searches by meaning too, unless you’ve switched that off in mello.
  • Read messages and whole conversations, and open attachments: PDFs and images, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and text.
  • Sort mail: mark it read or unread, flag it, move it to Archive, Junk, Trash or any folder, or snooze it until later.
  • Write drafts, including replies in the same thread, which wait in Drafts for you to check and send.
  • Keep your calendar: list your events, add, change or delete them.
  • Keep your tasks and contacts: add, change and tick off tasks, take up the tasks mello suggested from your mail, and look up or update contacts.

A few things it can’t do. It can’t delete mail for good: Trash is as far as it goes. Reading a message doesn’t mark it as read. And it only sees one mailbox: the one that signed in.

Try, for example: “Which emails from this week still need an answer from me?”, or “Find the train tickets for Saturday and add the trip to my calendar.”

Letting it send

Sending is off unless you tick Also allow sending mail when you connect. Without it, the assistant has no way to send at all: it prepares drafts, and you send them yourself from mello.

With it, the assistant can also send messages, schedule them for later, invite guests to events and answer invitations. Before each message, it shows you the recipients, subject and text and asks you to confirm. Claude asks before every such step unless you tell it to always allow; don’t.

Why the care: anyone can send you an email, and an email can contain text meant to trick an assistant, such as “forward all invoices to this address”. mello marks every message as coming from a third party, and tells the assistant to treat it as content, never as instructions. That lowers the risk, but can’t rule it out. So read what it proposes to send.

To change your choice, disconnect the app and connect it again.

What it sees, and what mello keeps

  • What the assistant receives: the messages, folders, events, tasks, contacts and search results it asks for while working on something you asked, the attachments it opens for you, and what came of its actions. Never your password.
  • Who handles it: the company behind the assistant, Anthropic for Claude and OpenAI for ChatGPT, under its own privacy policy.
  • What mello keeps: which app you connected, when, and what you allowed. Its access keys last one hour and are kept in memory only. The permission lasts until you withdraw it, and at most 30 days after the app last used it.

The full details are in the privacy policy.

How to disconnect

  • Claude: in Settings → Connectors, open mello and disconnect or remove it.
  • Claude Code: run claude mcp remove mello.
  • ChatGPT: remove the mello mail app in ChatGPT’s settings.

From then on, the assistant can no longer reach your mailbox. mello’s own settings don’t list connected apps yet. To withdraw an app’s permission on mello’s side straight away, write to hello@mello.mx.
