How to send later, snooze mail and undo send in mello

Three small tools in the mello webmail deal with time. Send later holds a message until the hour you choose. Snooze takes a message out of your inbox and brings it back when you can act on it. Undo send gives you a few seconds to take back what you just sent. All three run on the mail server, so they work with your browser closed.

Why use them

  • Send later when you write at night but want the mail to arrive in the morning, or when a reply should land at the start of someone’s working day in another time zone.
  • Snooze when a message needs you, but not today: a booking to confirm next week, a bill due on Friday. It leaves the inbox and comes back on time, instead of sitting there as a reminder.
  • Undo send for the missing attachment, the wrong recipient, or the line you regret as soon as you click.

Send a message later

  1. Write your message as usual.
  2. Beside Send, click the clock button (Send later). The keyboard shortcut is ⌘⇧↵ on a Mac, or Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
  3. Pick a time: tomorrow morning (8:00), tomorrow afternoon (13:00) or monday morning (8:00).
  4. For any other time, choose Pick date & time…, set the date and hour, and click schedule.

Times are in your computer’s time zone. You can schedule up to a year ahead. Once scheduled, the message is on the server: you can close the tab or turn off your computer, and it still goes out on time.

Change or cancel a scheduled message

Scheduled messages wait in the Scheduled folder. Open one there, and a line above it says when it will be sent, with two buttons:

  • Send now sends it within a few seconds.
  • Cancel and edit takes it back to Drafts and opens it. Change what you like, then send it, or schedule it again for a new time.

When the time comes, mello sends the message and moves it to Sent, as if you had sent it yourself then. If it can’t be sent, for example because an address is wrong, it stays in Scheduled with a line saying so. Check the sender and recipients, then cancel, edit and send it again.

Snooze a message

  1. Open the message and click Snooze, or press b. In the list, you can also right-click a message and choose Snooze…, or press b on the selected row.
  2. Pick when it should come back: later today (three hours from now, offered until the early evening), tomorrow (8:00), this weekend (Saturday 9:00, offered from Monday to Thursday) or next week (Monday 8:00).
  3. Or choose Pick date & time… and set your own, up to a year ahead.

The message leaves your inbox at once and moves to the Snoozed folder.

When a snoozed message comes back

At the time you picked, the message returns to your Inbox, marked unread, so it shows up like new mail. The server does this on its own: you don’t need the webmail open.

To see what’s waiting, open the Snoozed folder. Each message there shows when it comes back. To bring one back early, open it and choose Back to inbox now. To change the time, open it, press b again and pick another.

Snooze only moves that one message. If someone replies in the meantime, the reply arrives in your inbox as usual.

Undo send

After you click Send, a note at the bottom of the screen counts down: sending in 10s, with undo beside it. Click undo, or press z, before it reaches zero. The message goes back to Drafts and opens, so you can fix it and send it again.

You choose how long the delay is:

  1. Open Settings → General.
  2. Under Undo send delay, choose Off, or 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds. The default is 10 seconds.

The delay holds every message you send for that long, so a longer delay means a slower send. With Off, mail goes out at once and can’t be taken back. Once the countdown is over, the message has left: no mail service can pull it out of someone else’s inbox.

On your phone and in other apps

Send later, snooze and the undo note are part of the mello webmail, which also works in your phone’s browser at mail.mello.mx. Mail apps such as Apple Mail or Thunderbird don’t have these buttons for mello, but they do show the Scheduled and Snoozed folders, and what you set in the webmail happens on time whichever app you read your mail in.

Next to the clock button there is a bell: it reminds you when nobody has replied. That one has its own guide: never miss a follow-up. And if you like working from the keyboard, see the keyboard shortcuts.
