Sign in and manage your password
How signing in works in mello, how to change your password, and how to set a recovery address so you can reset a forgotten password yourself.
Go to mail.mello.mx and enter your full mello address, such as you@mello.mx, and your password. The eye in the password field (Show password) shows what you typed.
A sign-in lasts 12 hours in that browser. After that, mello asks for your password again.
Mail, calendar and contact apps
Apps such as Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird or DAVx⁵ use the same address and password as the webmail. mello has no separate app passwords. The server settings are in Settings → Accesses; see set up other apps.
Sign out
Open the menu under your initials, at the top right, and choose Sign out. Signing out also stops new-mail notifications in that browser.
There’s no button to sign out your other devices. Changing your password does it: see below.
Change your password
- Open Settings → General. Under Account, next to Password, choose Change password.
- Enter your Current password.
- Enter the new one under New password and again under Confirm new password.
- Choose Change password.
The new password needs at least 12 characters. It can’t be your address or a common, easy-to-guess password, and it must differ from the current one. A wrong current password counts as a failed sign-in: see can’t sign in.
If you have a confirmed recovery address, mello sends it a notice that your password was changed.
What a new password signs out
This applies whether you changed your password in Settings or reset it with a link:
- This browser stays signed in.
- Your other browsers have to sign in again with the new password.
- Mail, calendar and contact apps need the new password: enter it in each one on your phone and computer. An app that already has a connection open may keep it until it reconnects.
- Connected AI apps, such as ChatGPT or Claude, are disconnected: connect them again if you still want them.
- API keys keep working.
Set a recovery address
A recovery address is where mello sends a reset link if you forget your password. It must be at another provider, not a mello address.
- Open Settings → General. Under Account, next to Recovery address, choose Set.
- Enter the address and your Current password, then choose Send confirmation link.
- Open the link in that mailbox within 24 hours and choose Confirm address.
Until you confirm, the row says waiting for confirmation, and no reset link goes there. A confirmation link works once, and a newer one replaces it.
To use another address, choose Change: the new address is unconfirmed until you open its link, so confirm it right away. Remove deletes the recovery address; without one, you can’t reset a forgotten password yourself. If the row says This server can’t send recovery mail., you can’t set one.
If you forget your password
On the sign-in page, choose Forgot password?. mello sends a reset link to your confirmed recovery address. See can’t sign in for the steps, and for what to do without a recovery address.
Two-factor sign-in and passkeys
mello doesn’t offer two-factor sign-in or passkeys yet, so choose a long password that you don’t use anywhere else. A password manager helps. After 10 wrong passwords, mello stops checking for a while: see can’t sign in.
