How to set up mello on iPhone, iPad and Mac
Apple’s own apps work well with mello: Mail, Calendar and Contacts speak the same standard protocols mello does. A profile from the webmail sets up your mail in a minute. Calendars and contacts take one more step each. If you’d rather use mello’s webmail, you can add it to your Home Screen and get a notification for new mail.
Before you start
- Your mello address and password. It’s the same password as for the webmail. mello is invite only for now: request an invite if you don’t have an address yet.
- Safari, on iPhone and iPad. Configuration profiles only download from Safari there. On a Mac, any browser will do.
- Five minutes. Mail is set up by the profile; calendars and contacts are added by hand, with the same address and password.
Download the profile
- Sign in to the webmail at mail.mello.mx, on the device you’re setting up.
- Open Settings → Accesses.
- Choose Download profile. On iPhone and iPad, Safari asks whether to allow the download: choose Allow.
The profile holds your address and mello’s server settings. It doesn’t hold your password: you type it while you install it. It sets up your mail account only; calendars and contacts come after.
Install it on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Settings app. Near the top, under your name, tap Profile Downloaded. If it isn’t there, look in General → VPN & Device Management.
- Tap Install in the top corner, enter your device passcode, and tap Install again.
- Enter your mello password when asked.
Your mello account now shows in Mail. Install the profile within eight minutes of downloading it: after that, iOS deletes it and you download it again. If Stolen Device Protection is on and you’re away from a familiar place such as home, iOS won’t install profiles until you turn it off for a moment.
Install it on a Mac
- Open the downloaded file, in your Downloads folder. macOS says the profile is waiting in System Settings.
- Open System Settings → General → Device Management. On macOS Sonoma and earlier, it’s Privacy & Security → Profiles.
- Double-click the mello profile, choose Install, and enter your Mac’s own password to confirm.
- Enter your mello password when Mail asks for it.
To remove the account later, select the profile in the same place and click the minus button. Mail removes the account with it.
Add your calendars and contacts
The profile sets up mail only, so add calendars and contacts as accounts of their own. They use the same server, address and password.
On iPhone or iPad:
- In Settings, open Apps → Calendar → Calendar Accounts, then Add Account → Other → Add CalDAV Account.
- Enter
mail.mello.mxas the server, your full mello address as the user name, and your password. Tap Next, then Save. - For contacts, do the same under Apps → Contacts, with Add CardDAV Account.
On a Mac:
- Open System Settings → Internet Accounts → Add Account → Add Other Account, and choose CalDAV account.
- Choose Manual as the account type, and enter your mello address, your password and
mail.mello.mxas the server. - Do the same with CardDAV account for your contacts.
Your mello calendars show in Calendar, calendars other people share with you included, and your address book in Contacts. Changes go both ways: an event you add on your phone is in the webmail a moment later.
Or set up mail by hand
If you’d rather not use a profile, add the account yourself. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account → Other → Add Mail Account. On a Mac, open Mail and choose Mail → Add Account, then Other Mail Account.
Enter your name, your mello address and your password. Choose IMAP if asked, and fill in the servers:
| Server | Port | Security | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming (IMAP) | mail.mello.mx | 993 | SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing (SMTP) | mail.mello.mx | 465 | SSL/TLS |
| Username | your mello address |
The user name and password are the same for incoming and outgoing mail. The same settings are in the webmail, under Settings → Accesses.
Or use the webmail as an app
The webmail can live on your Home Screen or in your Dock like any app, and tell you when mail arrives.
- On iPhone or iPad, open mail.mello.mx in Safari and sign in. Tap Share → Add to Home Screen, then open mello from its new icon. On a Mac, in Safari, choose File → Add to Dock; in Chrome or Edge, use the install button in the address bar.
- In mello, open Settings → Notifications and turn on New mail on this device.
- Allow notifications when your device asks. send a test checks that they arrive.
On iPhone and iPad, notifications only work from the Home Screen icon, not in a Safari tab. On a Mac, they work in the browser too. They come for new mail in your Inbox, even while mello is closed, and show the sender and subject. Newsletters stay quiet unless you also turn on Also for newsletters and mailing lists.
