Delete your account

How to keep a copy of your mail before you leave, how to delete your account, and what happens to your data and your address.

Download your data first

Open Settings → General and, under Your data, choose Download all my data. You get one ZIP file with:

  • every mail folder as an .mbox file, which Apple Mail and Thunderbird can import;
  • your calendars as .ics files and your contacts as .vcf files;
  • your filters, auto-reply and settings.

What you keep in Files isn’t in the archive: download what you want to keep from there. Your mail is also reachable over IMAP, so a mail app can copy it straight into another account, the same way the move from Gmail guide copies mail into mello.

Delete your account

Before you start, change your address with the people and accounts that use it, such as your bank, the shops you use and the sites that send you password resets.

  1. Open Settings → General. Under Account, next to Delete account, choose Delete account….
  2. Enter your Current password.
  3. Type your full address in the field below, exactly as shown.
  4. Choose Delete my account.

Deleting happens at once and can’t be undone. It removes:

  • all your mail and folders;
  • your files and documents;
  • your calendars, contacts and tasks;
  • your aliases, API keys and connected apps;
  • your settings, the access you gave others and were given, the links you shared and the notifications on your devices.

You’re signed out, and the sign-in page says Your account was deleted.

If you can no longer sign in, reset your password first, or write to hello@mello.mx from another address. If your address belongs to an organization, its admin can also delete it.

When deleting is refused

mello doesn’t delete these accounts, and says why:

  • An organization’s owner or admin: hand the organization over to someone else, or have an owner remove you from it, first.
  • A server administrator: another administrator has to delete the account.

A wrong current password counts as a failed sign-in: see can’t sign in.

What happens afterwards

  • Mail sent to your address is refused, and the sender gets a bounce.
  • Your private addresses are retired: mail to them is refused, and they’re never given to anyone else. Your main address isn’t kept for you in the same way.
  • Copies in our backups disappear as the backups are replaced, within 12 weeks. Billing records, if you had a paid plan, are kept for 10 years, as Swiss accounting law requires.

The privacy policy has the details.
